The Power of Mentorship: Lessons from the Field

As we close out National Mentoring Month, it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on the lessons we've learned and the ways we've supported others. Whether it’s overcoming challenges, mastering new skills, or simply gaining wisdom from experience, mentorship plays a crucial role in personal and professional growth. At Notary Training Network, we’re starting the year with exciting changes behind the scenes, and we can't wait to share all the ways we’re working to better serve you!

Mentorship isn't just about receiving advice—it’s about learning through real-life experiences. As a mobile notary, I’ve had my fair share of “learning moments.” One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? The importance of communication—not just with clients, but with myself as well. In high-pressure situations, a little bit of stress (and a lot of humor) can go a long way!

The Unexpected Adventures of a Mobile Notary

When you're a mobile notary, things don’t always go according to plan. Maybe you get lost on the way to an appointment, find yourself sharing the table with a client's overly friendly pet, or have to navigate family dynamics when a spouse is reluctant to participate. These unexpected moments can feel overwhelming, but the way you handle them makes all the difference. Staying transparent, calm, and communicative helps build trust and turns potential chaos into a smooth experience for everyone involved.

If you ever find yourself in an unavoidable situation, take a deep breath, assess the circumstances, and adjust as needed to stay focused on the task at hand. Your ability to remain composed will not only help you navigate challenges but also reassure your clients that they are in good hands.

Tip #1: Communication is Key to a Positive Customer Experience

Speaking of stress... I recently had a notarization appointment where Google Maps and I were not on the same page. I got completely lost and had to email my clients so they could call and guide me to the location. Has anyone else ever had one of those moments where the GPS feels like it’s actively working against you? Despite the rocky start, my client was understanding, and we ended up having a smooth appointment. It was a great reminder that clear communication—and knowing when to ask for help—can transform a stressful situation into a positive experience.

Tip #2: Communicate Clearly About Pets Before the Appointment

Another thing I learned along the way is how to manage unexpected distractions—like pets! I’ve had my share of appointments where a playful dog or curious cat has been part of the scene. The key here? Staying in control without letting distractions affect your professionalism. Pets can be an adorable (and sometimes chaotic) part of a notary appointment, but clear communication is key. Before your appointment, ask your client if they have pets and if you’ll need to take any precautions, especially if the pet is large, anxious, or untrained. Set boundaries at the start of the appointment—let them know if you're comfortable with the pet being present or if you prefer they be in another room while you complete the notarization.

It’s also helpful to be calm and confident if the pet gets a little too curious. Your demeanor can set the tone and help maintain a professional atmosphere, even when your four-legged "assistant" is eager to meet you!

Share Your Stories!

We’ve all had moments where mentorship, guidance, or simply learning from experience has helped us through tough situations. Do you have any funny “lost” stories or times when you had to rely on someone else for support? We’d love to hear them—share your experiences with us! 😊
